1. Make it timely. The first letters to the editor received on a topic are read first and are more likely to be published. For example, cite the article, opinion piece or editorial to which you are responding.

2. Keep it short. If you letter is about 150 words or less it is more likely to be published.

3. Stay on point. The best letters concentrate on one topic. Pick a few powerful points to express and add a personal experience, if appropriate.

4. Proofread and spell check. Any typos can undermine your credibility so make sure you double-check your letter!

5. Include your name and contact information. Newspapers generally do not accept anonymous letters and often will confirm you are a real person. Make sure you include your mailing address and phone number.

6. Submit it multiple ways. Submit your letter to editor by fax, e-mail, or regular mail as a way to maximize your chances of being published.
