Agriculture
Agriculture is one of the most critical industries in the 29th Congressional District and in New York. I served as Chairman of the New York State Senate Agriculture Committee and now serve as the only Republican member of the House Agriculture Committee from the Northeast. Some of the critical issues facing agriculture today include crop insurance, specialty crop funding, country of origin labeling, animal identification, and the Canadian border opening.    Read More...

Crime
In order to create safer neighborhoods, law enforcement in our towns and cities must have the necessary tools and resources. Although decreasing crime rates are encouraging, and the violent crime rate in the United States is at the lowest in three decades, we must continue our battle to end crime.    Read More...

Education
Our congressional district is home to some of the best schools, colleges, and universities in the state and in the nation. As the former Chairman of the New York State Senate Committee on Education and a current member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, it's important to me to know what's going on in our schools and, importantly, hear from constituents about their ideas for improving our education system.    Read More...

Energy
The United States has a national energy policy for the first time since the 1970's. Prices at the gas pump continue to rise along with our dependence on foreign oil, so our new energy policy is designed to find reliable sources of oil in the short term while searching for new sources of renewable energy for the long term.    Read More...

Health Care
We are fortunate to have many high quality health care facilities in every population center of the 29th Congressional District. I would like to make sure that patients always have access to these institutions and that these facilities have the resources they need to continue the very important business of healing.    Read More...

Homeland Security
As the Vice Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, it is my job to provide greater security within our nation's airports and on our aircraft, and develop new ways to protect Americans that choose to fly. Some of these new protections since 9/11 include federal marshals on commercial airlines, law enforcement personnel at every airport screening location, and strict federal oversight of the nation's airline security screening programs.    Read More...

Jobs and Tax Relief
It is my top priority to maintain jobs and create an atmosphere that can provide additional employment in the 29th District, and I have been working personally with my colleagues in Congress to keep American companies and businesses within our borders. According to the Department of Labor, more than six million jobs have been created while unemployment rates have fallen dramatically since August 2003.    Read More...

Medicare
In 2003, Congress passed sweeping Medicare reform, which included Medicare Part D, a voluntary prescription drug coverage program for America senior citizens. Prior to Medicare Part D, many seniors in the 29th District had no prescription drug coverage and were forced to spend a large portion of their fixed income on prescription drugs.    Read More...

Transportation
The 29th Congressional District of New York has a strong transportation infrastructure that is critical to the economic development of the entire state. Because of this, I have made transportation issues one of my top priorities in Washington.    Read More...

Veteran Affairs
I have cosponsored some recent legislation that I believe will have a great impact on our veterans and keep our promise to those who have served our country. I cosponsored the Assured Funding for Veterans Health Care Act of 2005. This bill would ensure that there is mandatory funding for Veterans Health Care.    Read More...

War On Terror
Congress has continued to appropriate funds to support the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan. This money supports additional equipment and armor that our troops require in addition to restructuring of forces to operate more efficiently and effectively. The new government of Iraq is continuing to make progress, with the Iraqi Security Force due to take over security in all 18 Iraqi provinces by the end of next year, alleviating the burden of the United States and Multinational Forces.    Read More...
