Population of Congressional District 29

In 2001, Congressional District 29 had a household population of 552,000 - 292,000 (53 percent) females and 260,000 (47 percent) males. The median age was 38.1 years. Twenty-six percent of the population were under 18 years and 15 percent were 65 years and older.

For people reporting one race alone, 92 percent were White; 5 percent were Black or African American; 1 percent were American Indian and Alaska Native; 1 percent were Asian; less than 0.5 percent were Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 1 percent were some other race. Two percent reported Two or more races. Four percent of the people in Congressional District 29 were Hispanic. Eighty-eight percent of the people in Congressional District 29 were White non-Hispanic. People of Hispanic origin may be of any race.

HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: In 2001 there were 228,000 households in Congressional District 29. The average household size was 2.42 people.

Families made up 66 percent of the households in Congressional District 29 that year. This figure includes both married-couple families (48 percent) and other families (18 percent). Nonfamily households made up 34 percent of all households in Congressional District 29. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were comprised of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

Counties Within the 29th Congressional District

Allegany County

New York's 29th DistrictAllegany County consists of several small towns each with its own fascinating heritage. The county has a population of just over 50,000 people, located throughout its 29 townships. One of the larger populated areas is the Wellsville region. Points of interest and tourist destinations include the historical downtown districts of Alfred, Angelica, and Cuba and also over 20 locally owned and operated historical museums. Allegany County offers a unique cultural experience with weekend tours of 25-30 artists’ studios and other performing arts facilities. Within the county there are dozens of beautiful campgrounds and also a few beautiful campuses including Alfred State College, Alfred University, and Houghton College. The three colleges within the county employ a large number of people along with the Northern Lights Candle Company. Cattaraugus County

Cattaraugus County is one of the larger counties within the district in regards to area and has a population of just less than 83,000. The county has 33 towns and two cities, Olean and Salamanca. One of the largest employers in the county, Cutco Cutlery Corporation, is located in Olean. Tourist attractions include the Seneca-Allegany Casino located off of Interstate 86 and the Allegheny State Park, which is the largest state park in New York with 65,000 acres, open year round offering over 18 hiking trials and several fishing locations. Another attraction is the Onoville Marina, which is not only the county’s largest but also one of the region’s finest and most affordable marinas. Colleges within the county include Jamestown Community College, Olean Business Institute and St. Bonaventure University. Chemung County

Chemung County is known as the home of the famous author, Mark Twain. This county has a population of approximately 90,000 people and has 11 townships within its boundaries, including the city of Elmira. Just located outside of Elmira are both the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport and the Arnot Mall. A few of the tourist attractions within the county include the Harris Hill Park, which is the site of the National Soaring Museum, the National Warplane Museum, and the Dunn Field Memorial Stadium, celebrating 100 years of tradition as the home to the Elmira Pioneers, a Northeast Minor League baseball team. In addition to several tourist destinations, Chemung County is home to many manufacturing firms including the Anchor Glass Container Corporation, and Howell Packaging. Chemung County offers excellent health care services through Arnot Health, Elcor Health Services, and St. Josephs Hospital. Monroe County

Monroe County is the most metropolitan region within the 29th Congressional District, with the Greater Rochester area being the third largest in New York State. The county has a population of over 700,000 people, however not all of Monroe sits within the 29th District, only 9 towns in the Southeastern portion do. Monroe County attracts people from all over who come to visit the many tourist destinations including Seabreeze Park, the Seneca Park Zoo, and the Geva Theater Center. People also come annually to watch and partake in the Lilac Festival, which consists of numerous events and a parade. There are several museums in Monroe County such as the George Eastman House and the Strong Museum. While there are many attractions there are also several employment opportunities with Fortune 500 companies like Xerox and Kodak located in Rochester. Another large company within Monroe County is Wegmans Food Markets, which began in Rochester and now has stores throughout the North East. Monroe County also has several universities and colleges including the Eastman School of Music, Monroe Community College, Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College, and University of Rochester. Ontario County

Ontario County has several tourist destinations including many wineries surrounding Canandaigua Lake and many historical downtown regions. This beautiful area was voted Number One best place to live in rural America by the Progressive Farmer Magazine and is one of the fastest growing counties in New York State. Ontario County consists of 15 towns and has a population of 104,000 people. The county stretches from Eastview Mall in Victor to the vineyards of Naples. There are over 200 manufacturing firms within the county and a few of the top 10 employers include Constellation Brands, Thompson Health & Hospital Car Services, Pactiv Corporation, and the VA Medical Group. There are two colleges located within the county, the Finger Lakes Community College and Hobart-William Smith College. Schuyler County

Schuyler County may be the smallest county in the 29th Congressional District, with a population of approximately 20,000 people, but it certainly has attractions that bring in tourist by the thousands. The Watkins Glen area is known for its beautiful State Park which has 19 waterfalls that can be seen annually. The Watkins Glen State Park is celebrating its 100th Birthday and is a large attraction for the area. To go along with the beauty of Watkins Glen is the Finger Lakes National Forest; this world class park offers over 30 miles of interconnecting trails that traverse gorges, ravines, pastures, and woodlands. Probably the most popular attraction within Schuyler County is the Watkins Glen International Speedway that annually hosts NASCAR racing every August. Some of the largest employers in the county include Schuyler Hospital, Cargill Salt, Wagner Lumber and U.S. Salt. Steuben County

Steuben County has a population of approximately 100,000 people and is one of the largest counties in the 29th Congressional District, with 32 towns and two cities, Hornell and Corning. The only college in the county is Corning Community College. Within the county sits the world famous Corning Museum of Glass along with one of the largest area employers, Corning Incorporated. A few other large employers include Alstom, Mercury Aircraft, and St. James Mercy Hospital. Other museums within the county are the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. In regards to other tourist destinations Steuben has a lot to offer in addition to museums. Other attractions include Stony Brook State Park and Pinnacle State Park. These locations offer a unique experience with nature with great access to hiking trails and camping spots. Yates County

Yates County is a highly agricultural area with over 30 working full time farms. The region not only consists of vast farmland, they also have magnificent wineries. The county has a population of just less than 25,000 people which are located across its 9 towns. Yates County borders three Finger Lakes, Seneca, Keuka, and Canandaigua and has at least 20 wineries and half a dozen vineyards along these lakeshores. Various agencies offer guided tours along the lakeshores and through the wineries where not only tourists but also locals can get a first hand experience on why Yates County is known for its wine. Another popular attraction in Yates County is the Windmill and Farm Market, people from all over the region travel to this location in search of bargain prices and a rural atmosphere.
